MANLEY VILLAGE  HALL  GETS

GRANT FUNDING FROM

CHESHIRE WEST & THE BIG LOTTERY FUND

Manley Village Hall has received a total of £10,693 Grant Funding. This was provided by the Big Lottery Fund, Awards for All who have given £4420 and the Rural Support Fund from Cheshire West and Chester Council who have given £6273. These funds have been spent in making the Village Hall more compliant and have been used to:

• Install a new bunded oil tank
• Upgrade the internal and external lighting to make it more energy efficient and also to give more ambient lighting in the hall, also to install new slot meters for the lighting in the snooker room.
• Install a new disabled ramp into the kitchen as the old ramp was too steep
• Replace all Fire Doors with new doors
• Repair and replace the damaged leaded panes of glass around the main hall, and also in the kitchen and the snooker room.

The Management Committee of the Village Hall’s aim was to improve the fabric of the building, in order to comply with Health & Safety and therefore to make it a safer, more desirable place for the community to meet and spend time. Ian Milburn, the Chairman said “ This grant funding was spent on essential works and we hope that these improvements will attract new users to the Hall and open this valuable facility to a wider cross-section of the community. “

HOWZAT!

Manley 6 a side Cricket

held on Sunday 7th August 2011
The Match Report

We had cricket players, we had cake, we had balloons, games for the kids, hot tea, and beer from the village hall. We had people across all generations whacking balls and running, shouting, jumping up and down, and generally joining in the fun. We had drama on the field and we had cheers from the crowd. We had the theme from Test Match special playing and Phil Brooks on the PA system giving a ball by ball commentary. If you missed it – well, where were you? We had the best afternoon in town!

Four teams of six competed to win the Manley Challenge Cup – donated by our very own Ian Milburn. Each person had to bat, each person had to bowl. During the next three hours, stars were made, balls were whacked, caught or dropped to the vast entertainment of the small crowd of spectators. Under 12’s made runs and took wickets alongside the adults. Meanwhile spectators drank tea and ate cakes that had been baked and donated to the event by people all over Manley.
After a tense final between “Manley Lane” and “Jolly Hockey Sticks”, the Manley Challenge Cup was won by Jolly Hockey Sticks (121 runs to 103). The triumphant Jolly Hockey Sticks comprised : Oliver Unett, Anna Unett, William Unett, Henry Unett, George Compston and James Compston.

“Player of the tournament” went to an unexpected star. Alex McDowell who is just 8 years old. Alex was visiting his aunt and uncle in Manley. (Pam and Phil Brooks). Alex came along and was offered a place in the Manley Lane team – he looked like any other 8 year old off the pitch, but once on the pitch suddenly transformed into a professional cricket player! John Boulby umpired for the day, only leaving the pitch to have the occasional cup of tea between matches.

“Fantastic afternoon” wrote Pam Brooks after the event.

“We thoroughly enjoyed the day which I think was a success in all respects, and another great way of bringing our community together” said Oliver Unett.
“I think everyone had a really superb family, village day out - couldn't have been better and even the weather was kind. Well done, I know that all my gang (Unetts included) were ecstatic about it all. It was lovely to see so many people from different parts of the Village Involved and also so many age groups”. Commented Juliet Compston.
Finally, we’d like to say thank you to a number of people. Events like this do not happen without a lot of people putting a lot of effort in and we have tried to list as many as we can think of below. If we have missed anyone, please accept our apologies, and our heartfelt thanks. Here goes: thanks to:

• All players who batted or fielded on the day – we had teams from the parish council, the bowls club, from Manley Lane and a team made up of the Unetts and Compstons.
• Anyone who baked us a cake and donated it (we saw Juliet Compston paying good money for some scones that she herself had donated!)
• Alvanley Cricket Club for loaning us the balls, stumps and mobile scoreboard
• Manley Parish Council for getting the field mown in time
• Ian Millburn for providing the cup and lending us the PA system
• Oliver Unett for marking out the wicket and providing boundary lines
• Ruth and Steve Frood (and the Gambles), for loaning us the gazebo and putting it up/taking it down. Also, Ruth for scoring so competently
• Peter Sherlock for loaning us the generator and letting us use his field for overflow carparking
• Lisa Underhill for sorting out the bar at the last minute, and for running around helping the refreshment stall
• Pam Brooks and Olga Spruce for manning the tea and cake stall
• Phil Brooks for being commentator for the day – we knew it was all going to be OK the second he played the Test Match theme music.
• Vinnie for being the handiest handyman there is and Graham Underhill for doing “mens” stuff with the generator and getting it working.
• Lucy for being barmaid at very very short notice
• John Boulby for being a very calm and competent umpire.
• Julie Bircher for having the idea in the first place
